The population of Diu district is 44,110 (2001 census) with a density of 1103 persons per sq.km and a sex ratio of 1117. the population is more or less equally distributed in urban and rural areas of the territory and a majority in rural area is engaged in fishing as means of their livelihood. The literacy rate is 74.14 percent. Vanakbara has the majority rural population (13,486). The majority population comprises Hindus with Muslims and Christians forming an important minority. Sidis constitute the major scheduled tribes of the district whereas scheduled caste population is formed by Bhangi, Hadi and Vankar. Together they account for less than 4 percent of the total population.
